UDP keeps stronghold in San Ignacio and Santa Elena

By Breaking Belize News Staff: The incumbent UDP Mayor Earl Trapp managed to keep his seat in the March 6 Municipal Elections.

Trapp and his team delivered 5 councilor seats and the PUP won 1 Councilor seat.

Across Belize, the PUP delivered full slates in 8 municipalities.

During election day, BBN spoke to several voters who explained that though the Municipal elections are to elect a Town Council, it serves as a report card for Area Representatives across Towns.

The Twin Towns which include the Constituencies of Cayo Central, Cayo North and Cayo Northeast elected 3 PUP Area Representatives in 2020.

However, an interesting shift occurred over the last few years and though the PUP delivered in municipalities across the country, the party was unable to deliver in the Twin Towns of San Ignacio and Santa Elena.

Among the comments we heard, was that the current Area Representatives and their office teams are unwelcoming to residents in their areas.

In addition, though there are elected Area Representatives that can work with the current Government, they have been unable to demonstrate solid development and have been absent with regards to providing assistance to many residents in their area.

As has been customary, the UDP’s machinery was in full swing in San Ignacio and Santa Elena with a steady influx of voters throughout the day.
