University of Belize’s Science Department Faculty receive training on DNA extraction and barcoding

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On March 8, 2024, the University of Belize’s Science Department hosted a foundational training session on DNA extraction and barcoding.

The training was aimed at strengthening the capacity of the Belizean scientific community.

Leading the session was visiting Fulbright Fellow Dr. Stokes Baker from the University of Detroit Mercy, who advocates for integrating molecular technologies into education and is actively involved in research to promote the health of sea cucumbers in aquaculture environments.

Participants included faculty members and lab technicians from the University of Belize, alongside guests from partner NGOs such as Oceana, TREES, the Belize Zoo, and the Crocodile Research Coalition.

The session covered theoretical foundations and practical applications, including direct DNA extraction and PCR amplification, DNA barcoding analysis using Chromas software, and species identification through BLAST submission.

“This initiative underscores the university’s commitment to advancing scientific collaboration and innovation while highlighting the necessity for dedicated DNA equipment and laboratory facilities to empower stakeholders and foster interdisciplinary research endeavours.

DNA barcoding emerges as a vital tool in biodiversity research and conservation biology, offering precise species classification and insights into biodiversity dynamics,” the University of Belize said.

The workshop provided a valuable platform for attendees to gain insights and establish connections within the scientific community, reinforcing the university’s role as a catalyst for knowledge exchange and collaboration.
