By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is mourning the loss of Justice Michael de la Bastide who passed away on 30 March 2024.
De la Bastide was the first President of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), a role to which he applied his extensive knowledge of the law and administration.
“He will be remembered for establishing the foundation for high-functioning, responsive regional jurisprudence, the hallmark of the CCJ.
His distinguished service to his country, including as a member of the Wooding and the Hyatali Constitution Commissions, Independent Senator in the first Republican Parliament, President of the Law Association, and Chief Justice, set an example of integrity, excellence, and efficiency for many practitioners and aspirants to the legal profession, as well as everyday citizens,” CARICOM said in a statement.
The Caribbean Community says it lauds his legacy of stellar contributions and achievements, which have left an indelible mark on the Region’s legal landscape.
CARICOM extended heartfelt condolences to his family, the Government and People of Trinidad and Tobago, and the entire legal fraternity.
May his soul rest in peace.
