ComPol: State of Emergency can’t be effective against domestic-related murders

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

Posted: Wednesday, April 10, 2024. 10:00 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Since the imposition of a State of Emergency blanketing most of Southside Belize City and parts of Roaring Creek and Camalote in the Cayo District, instigated by three murders in succession, there have been four more – Clay Monsanto on Good Friday; Malcolm Reynolds six days after that along the Burrell Boom Road, then Wilbert Banks along the Lake Gardens Road in Ladyville, and finally Linberth Flowers on Caesar Ridge Road in Belize City early on Monday.

But as noted by Commissioner of Police Chester Williams during this week’s police briefing, it is difficult to police murders driven by personal vendettas, including domestic-related ones, which all but the Monsanto murder appear to be.

As he explained, “…certainly, the type of murders that the SOE is geared to prevent, it is working for that reason. The murders we’re seeing now, those acts of jealousies, and those domestic types of murders are extremely difficult to prevent because we don’t know when a man is going to decide to go and kill the current boyfriend of his ex-girlfriend. It’s difficult.”

Police have made arrests in the murders of Reynolds and Banks and have detained persons to be questioned in the murders of Flowers and Monsanto, alias Clay Uter.

Last week, the Commissioner told reporters that it is not quite a fair expectation that there would be absolutely no murders while a State of Emergency is in place as some acts cannot be prevented, even by police work.
