By Aaron Humes: According to police, 25-year-old Charles James, a Coast Guard officer of Consuelo Street, Belize City, was shot dead Wednesday night at home in front of his family. Police were quickly able to capture one of his two suspected killers.

Police found James with multiple gunshot wounds to the body, seated on a blue sofa.

He was having dinner with his common-law wife and two children when suddenly they were approached by two gunmen in full black clothing. One of the men pulled out a firearm and fired multiple shots towards James, fatally injuring him. The gunmen then fled but Special Patrol Unit (SPU) Police personnel in the area started pursuing the suspects.

The shooters and police exchanged fire which injured one of the male suspects on Haulze Street. He was identified and transported to KHMH with gunshot injuries for medical treatment where he is currently listed in a stable condition and under police guard. The second suspect is still being sought.

According to the coordinator of the William Dawson Peace Cup Douglas Hyde, writing on social media, “CJ – Charles James, is from Hattieville Village but also plays on the Lake I FC team in our football peace cup tournament, one of the coolest youth that every game he will not pass me without hailing me with respect. My prayers & condolence [go] out to his immediate family, our entire football tournament family. This is a deep blow to all of us, let’s keep all our 260-plus players in our daily prayers, please. We shall dedicate all of this coming Sunday’s games to his loving memory.”
