Heat alert issued for inland Belize as temperatures expected to soar

Posted: Sunday, April 28, 2024. 9:36 am CST.

By Horace Palacio: The Belize National Meteorological Service has issued a heat alert for inland areas of the country. Temperatures today, April 28th, 2024, are projected to reach and possibly exceed 97 degrees Fahrenheit (37 degrees Celsius). Residents, particularly those in inland regions, are urged to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.

The Meteorological Service advises residents to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids and avoiding sugary or alcoholic beverages. They urge people to minimize outdoor activity, especially during the hottest afternoon hours, and to seek shade and wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing if they must be outside. To keep homes cool, residents should utilize air conditioning, fans, and window coverings for a comfortable indoor temperature.

Apart from the heat, the forecast anticipates mainly fair weather with sunny skies and a few cloudy spells. Showers are expected to be isolated, but there’s a chance of isolated thunderstorms inland later this afternoon. Marine conditions will have winds from the east at 10-20 knots with moderate to rough seas. A small craft caution is in effect.

Similar weather conditions are expected to continue into Monday.

Residents are encouraged to stay updated on the latest weather forecasts and advisories from the Belize National Meteorological Service.
