Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing: Vehicular load restrictions imposed for Haulover Bridge

Posted: Tuesday, January 3, 2023. 1:46 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH) announced the imposition of vehicular load restrictions for the Haulover Bridge.

Commencing, Monday, January 9, 2023, heavy, commercial, construction vehicles and heavy equipment shall not use the Haulover Bridge to enter or exit Belize City.

The MIDH noted that vehicles in excess of 22,000 pounds gross weight shall not use the Haulover Bridge.

Examples of vehicles that are NOT PERMITTED, effective Monday, January 9, 2023, include loaded dump trucks, beverage trucks, dual rear-axle furniture trucks, dual rear-axle high-sided trucks, cement trucks, tow trucks, container and double container trucks, tow trucks and trailers with heavy machinery, multiaxle military trucks and tow trucks with any oversized loads.

All vehicles with 3 or more axles (1 front and 2 rear axles), with the exception of passenger busses with valid Department of Transport permit routes are not permitted.

The Ministry says that these restrictions have become necessary as safety measures to reduce the rate of deterioration of the existing bridge deck, which is already beyond its design service life.

Drivers of heavy vehicles not permitted to use the Haulover Bridge are advised to use the John Smith Road as an optional route.

The Ministry says that transport officers will be on site to offer guidance to those who are unsure of the weight of their vehicles, for a period of approximately 1 week, thereafter violators may be ticketed.

“We would like to thank the general public for their kind cooperation in respecting, abiding by these vehicle weight restrictions and by exercising due care and attention at all times, when operating motor vehicles,” MIDH stated.
