Belize listed among Most Forested Countries in the World

Posted: Tuesday, May 30, 2023. 4:51 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Belize has been listed among the 30 most forested countries in the world, Yahoo reports.

The countries were ranked by the percentage of Forest Cover.

Statistics from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) shows that between 1990 and 2000, the global forest area dropped by 7.8 million hectares annually.

In addition, since 1990, 420 million hectares of forests have been lost.

Forests are reducing around the world and more people are committed to planting forests.

The article noted that it used the UN FAO’s Global Forest Resources Assessment 2020 to first determine countries with the highest hectarage of forests.

Belize was listed with a total of 56% of area covered by forests.

Out of Belize’s 2.38 million hectares, 1.28 million are covered by forests.

Forests are vital to life on Earth.

They purify the air we breathe, filter the water we drink, prevent erosion, and act as an important buffer against climate change.

Forests offer a home to much of the world’s diverse array of plants and animals and provide essential natural resources from timber and food to medicinal plants.

Forests also support the lives of local communities and help them to thrive.

But forests around the world are under threat.

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) reports that in 2020, the tropics lost more than 12 million hectares of tree cover.

“Illegal logging, poor forest management practices, and growing demand for forest and agricultural products contribute to their rampant destruction,” WWF notes.
