National Committee for Families and Children mourns the loss of 6-year-old to COVID-19

By BBN Staff: Belize lost its first pediatric patient, a six-year-old boy, to COVID-19 last week. The news shocked the nation and today, the National Committee for Families and Children (NCFC) issued a statement joining in mourning and calling on all Belizeans to do their part to keep children safe by preventing the spread of COVID-19.

“The loss of any life due to this pandemic is tragic, but it is even more heart wrenching when a child dies,” the NCFC said. “We urge the public to adhere to the advice and warnings coming from the Ministry of Health and other departments. We need to ensure that we continue to do all we can to protect our most vulnerable population.”

The Committee reminded parents that they are their child’s first line of defense against the virus, making it even more important to abide by all the health and safety protocols established by the Ministry of Health such as frequent handwashing, wearing a mask, and avoiding unnecessary social gatherings.

The committee concluded by saluting all frontline workers who are working tirelessly in the national COVID-19 response.

The child had been hospitalized at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) and had a pre-existing condition affecting his kidneys, according to the Director of Health Services for the Ministry of Health Dr. Marvin Manzanero.
