World’s richest man, Elon Musk, says he’ll donate $6 billion if World Food Programme can prove how funds will be used to solve hunger crisis

By Benjamin Flowers: Last week we reported that the Director of the World Food Programme (WFP) David Beasley called for a one-time donation from billionaires Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos, to help resolve a hunger crisis affecting over 40 million people. This week, Yahoo News reports that Elon Musk, currently the world’s richest man, has said that he is willing to make the donation if the WFP can prove how the funds will be used to help.

Musk, whose net worth is currently estimated at over $300 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Tweeted that he would sell Tesla stock and donate the proceeds, which would amount to roughly 2 percent of his worth if the WFP could show him how the donation will solve world hunger.

“But it must be open source accounting, so the public sees precisely how the money is spent,” Musk said.

Beasley responded assuring Musk that systems of transparency and accountability would be in place if the donation was made.

“I can assure you that we have the systems in place for transparency and open source accounting. Your team can review and work with us to be totally confident of such,” Beasley said.

Beasley has said on numerous occasions that over 42 million people in 43 countries are in dire need of food and that the world’s wealthiest people could solve the problem by donations measured in only fractions of their net worth.

The sentiment has drawn harsh criticism of the WFP, by users who have noted that the WFP raised over $8 billion in 2020, and did not succeed in resolving the crisis from which it is now asking the world’s wealthiest people for a bailout. Others have noted that the figure being requested works out to around $150 per person and is unlikely to have the effect the WFP claims it would have.
