Couple accused of immigration offences granted bail

Friday, June 20, 2014. AARON HUMES Reporting: Guatemalans Marleny Castellanos and Alfredo Gonzalez Marcos were granted bail of $20,000 and $10,000 each today by Justice Troadio Gonzalez.

They are accused of illegally using fraudulent Belizean documents to stay in Belize. Castellanos is further accused of helping as many as 18 Central American nationals from the island of Caye Caulker to fraudulently obtain and use birth certificates and nationality certificates to stay in Belize.

The pair are to report to the Queen Street Police Station every Friday, surrender their travel documents and not interfere with the witnesses in the case.

Justice Gonzalez said he was not satisfied that Castellanos and Marcos are not Belizeans.

They are represented by attorney Kevin Arthurs and Crown Counsel Leroy Banner represented the prosecution.

They return to court on July 17.
