Monday, January 26, 2015. AARON HUMES Reporting: The woes of Belizean women in politics are well-documented but there was a new tack in the ongoing discussion in the form of a conference held in Belize City today concerning what organizer for the Gender and Justice Foundation of Costa Rica calls the sharing of power between men and women.
Rodrigo Jimenez says it is important for men to relinquish fears of women in power as it makes society more equal and tolerant of the important views and issues for women.
Guest presenter Senator Maurwen Clarke of Costa Rica says that women must be at the table in order to inspire change. The culture of thinking of politics as “dirty” must be got rid of and women given an opportunity to properly compete and be able to make policy on behalf of the nation.
One woman who knows all about the bumps and bruises of politics in Belize is the only current female member of the House of Representatives, Belize Rural Central area representative Dolores Balderamos-Garcia.
She expects that there will be solid recommendations for the activists and other women participating in today’s conference.
