Husband attempts to set wife on fire

Wednesday, June 17^th, 2015. BMG: A lady from the village of Santa Clara in the Corozal District is lucky to be alive after she had a violent encounter with her husband.

Reports are that on Monday night around 7:30 pm, 36 year old Maria Pech, reported that she was in her back yard, when her husband Joel Pech who was asleep, woke up attacking her verbally.

Maria claims that Joel had threatened to chop her, lashing her on her left leg.  Fearing for her life she ran away from the house where Joel chased her stoning her with the machete but missed.

She later went back to her house where her husband came outside and set chase, catching up with her, dragged her by her hair and locked her in the kitchen. Whilst in the kitchen, it is alleged that Joel then threw kerosene on her and tried to light on her fire.

Maria told police she managed to wash off some of the kerosene before he acted on his threat to light her on fire.

Maria received a burn to her right forearm. Corozal Police have since detained Joel Pech, pending investigation of attempted murder and other charges.
