According to The Register, he was arrested in Tennessee, where he now resides, on Sunday night and was charged with driving under the influence and possession of a handgun whilst intoxicated.
McAfee, who remains a person of interest to Belize in the death of neighbour Gregory Faull in 2011 on San Pedro, was seen grinning in his police mugshot.
He has defended himself via email, admitting to being under the influence of panic attack drug Xanax, which he said was a brand new prescription received the day he was arrested – he says the physician didn’t tell him he shouldn’t be driving while taking it.
He adds that he always carries a handgun with him and broke no law unless he was impaired. He also claims that the encounter is “highly exaggerated.”
McAfee continues to speak out on a variety of issues including citizen privacy and watering down of software and encryption, claiming that such “weaknesses” open the door for hackers.
His life is expected to be the subject of a documentary series in production in the U.S.
