BREAKING: Guatemala President Otto Perez Molina Resigns

Thursday, September 3rd 2015. BMG: The President of Guatemala, Otto Perez Molina resigned late last night after a judge issued an arrest warrant against him in connection to a growing corruption scandal that has put the country into a political crisis.

Vice President Alejandro Maldonado Aguirre will take office to serve out Mr. Pérez Molina’s term which ends in January.

According to Attorney General Thelma Aldana, President Molina faces charges of fraud, illicit association and corruption related to a customs fraud ring that gave discounts on import tariffs to companies in exchange for kickbacks.

Molina’s resignation comes just days ahead of a presidential election on Sunday to determine the president’s successor.
