By BBN Staff: The University of Belize (UB) and the Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to implement a scholarship program designed to enhance the National Protected Areas System towards the achievement of Belize’s sustainable development goals.

The agreement was recently signed by President of the University of Belize, Professor Emeritus Clement Sankat Ph.D and by Board Chairperson of PACT, Percival Cho, Ph.D for the period 15th June, 2017 through 31st August, 2019.

Five Bachelor’s Degree scholarships valued at $50,000 will be provided to UB students starting in August, 2017. Students who apply for the scholarships must be accepted in any of the following programs: Natural Resource Management, Biology, Information Technology, Mathematics, Tourism Management, Business Management, Social Work and Public Sector Management.

Both UB and PACT will fully engage the recipient students during the duration of scholarships. Students will stay engaged with stakeholders through internships and site visits in conjunction with the Protected Areas Management network and other partner organizations.

In addition to providing quality education, UB also pledges to assist the students with $400 book grants at the University’s bookstore, which would render the total value of the scholarship at $52,000.

UB is proud to mentor the students and monitor their progress up to that time when they become alumni of the institution and UB President Sankat pledges to “ensure that this partnership between PACT and UB advances the developmental goals of Belize through the training of high level human resources, committed to the sustainable development of Belize.” He further commends PACT, its Chairman and all members of its Board on this initiative, one that will positively change several lives. He called on all like-minded institutions to partner with UB, thereby giving hope to young people who desire a university education.
