By BBN Staff: A contrabandista refusing to peacefully surrender his goods to Custom officials was gunned down yesterday.

According to police reports, shortly after 5 p.m. cops visited Yo Creek Village in Orange Walk District where they saw Orange Walk resident, Dwayne Almendarez, 30,suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Police investigation revealed that Custom officers and BDF soldiers conducted a search on a passenger bus near La Union.

During the search they attempted to confiscate some un-customed goods.

However, Almendarez refused and during an altercation he reportedly assaulted one of the officers.

Tensions quickly escalated and the passengers who were taken off the bus, began to attack the law enforcement officers.

They even hurled rocks at them causing the officers to fire a single warning shot.

However, that shot did not deter Almendarez who reportedly continued to attack the custom officer.

In fear of his life, the officer pulled out his licensed 9 mm pistol and fired several shots causing injuries to Almendarez.

He was transported to the Northern Regional Hospital and later to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for further treatment.

BBN understands that his condition is critical but stable.
