In its pre-referendum education and awareness campaign, Guatemala announced its intention to include Belize as a part of its territory.
According to the PUP, the strategy of the Guatemalan media and its government is to weaken Belize’s position at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
The PUP refers to the remarks of Senator Eamon Courtenay, former Foreign Minister of Belize, who said, “How can the Foreign Minister being presented with that question, not say what he is going to do? 1 – Why hasn’t a diplomatic protest been sent? 2 – Why haven’t we engaged the OAS, who has superintendence over this process, saying that is an act of bad faith; 3 – Why hasn’t the Government of Belize come out immediately with a press statement condemning it to Guatemala, and saying that it is just wrong? Why have we not galvanized our supporters on the international stage and said, ‘This is going in the wrong direction?”
The PUP says that it strongly rejects Guatemala’s decision, and calls on the Organization of American States (OAS) to intervene immediately in what amounts to no less than an egregious breach of conduct and good faith.
The party calls on Prime Minister Dean Barrow to correct the disastrous behaviour of his Foreign Minister.
The PUP also notified PM Barrow and Foreign Minister Elrington that in the face of their continued inaction, the Opposition will register the strongest protest on behalf of the people of Belize to Guatemala, the OAS, Friends of Belize and all stakeholders in the resolution of this unfounded claim.
