Leaders First

Posted: Wednesday, December 6, 2017. 8:51 am CST.

Charles Leslie Jr.: If you want to build a productive and fair country and society, the simple rule is: the rules and laws first apply to the LEADERS before they are applied to the citizens.

The traditional politicians of Belize, past and present, have always rationalized the alternative and believed that winning elections gave them the authority to make an exception for themselves.

Many leaders in the progressive movement have been making the sacrifice of exposing themselves to the rules first, obey the rules first and make the sacrifices first, because when they reach the point that the Belizean people trust them enough to put them in office, that culture will be more likely to stick.

This is why many of the progressive leaders are not focused on winning elections, but listening and learning.

The new leaders of Belize have their energies focused on finding like-minded Belizeans who want real, substantive change that benefit all.

We all hold a Collective Responsibility for the state of our nation.

None of us are perfect, however, we must move from  “blaming” to “holding responsible”, and start holding ourselves responsible first and foremost, and this process will help us reach the tipping point of holding our leaders responsible.

 We must never forget:

The rules that matter the most are the ones about behavior, transparency and accountability.

People might hear what you say, but they always remember what you do.

Only the people can free the people from the slavery of this current dysfunctional system and its guardians.

If we the people want change we must take responsibility in supporting these traditional politicians who buy our votes, treat us with free bus rides, free food, free booze, free t-shirts, free loads of sand, lease lots, a fist full of dollars…leaders who will make any and all compromises to win elections.

Once we do this, these types politicians will become obsolete, and your attention will be drawn to the people who have been leaders in your communities all along, but their objectives was never to win elections, however to get things done without fear or favor…

…and those leaders will rise and take up the job of leading Belize out of this abyss…with full participation of the people…with a system that empowers the people…and hold the leaders responsible and accountable.

I wish all Belizeans, at home and abroad, and true friends of Belize, a Merry Christmas and a Happy and blessed New Year.

All of us are responsible for our country

and each other.
