Time running out for Andrew Bennett

Posted: Thursday, January 11, 2018. 9:15 am CST.

BBN Staff:  Attorney Andrew Bennett, wanted in the United States on charges of money laundering, is now reportedly one step closer to being extradited.

7 News Belize has reported that Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wilfred Elrington has signed off on documents presented by Solicitor General Nigel Hawke, moving the extradition process to its next phase. Elrington’s reported signing, means that he is satisfied that the case against Bennett warrants his extradition.

According to the steps outlined by Attorney General Michael Peyrefitte earlier this week,  the AG’s ministry will do some assessments of the documents, and if satisfied will apply to the Magistrate’s Court for a provisional warrant.

Bennett, who has professed his innocence to local media on several occasions, stands accused after agreeing to launder $250,000 for a man whom he did not know was an undercover agent of the United States Government. Bennett had allegedly charged a 20 percent fee and assured that he would be able to launder even more money after purchasing an advertising company, Slingshot Signs.

The company’s owner said that Bennett had expressed an interest in buying the business, but that the deal never materialized.
