CARICOM condemns derogatory remarks made by US President Donald Trump

Posted: Tuesday, January 16, 2018. 10:38 am CST.

BBN Staff: Over the past few days, social media has been in an uproar following derogatory remarks reportedly made by United States President Donald Trump about several African nations and developing countries including Haiti.

Trump was at a meeting for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) when he reportedly made the derogatory remarks. He referred to the nations as ‘shithole countries’. After his comment went viral, several American media houses gave extended coverage bringing to light the series of disasters and struggles that Haitian residents endure.

A report from the Washington Post quotes President Trump stating: “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?”

Yesterday, CARICOM joined in condemning the comments of President Trump.

CARICOM issued a statement saying that it is “deeply disturbed by reports about the use of derogatory and repulsive language by the President of the United States in respect of our Member State, Haiti, and other developing countries. CARICOM condemns in the strongest terms, the unenlightened views reportedly expressed.”

CARICOM says that this insult to these countries and their citizens is unacceptable.
