A murderous March – 17 people, including 4 females murdered

Posted: Wednesday, April 4, 2018. 4:51 pm CST.

BBN Staff: A total 17 murders were recorded last month in Belize.

Twelve of the murders were recorded in the streets of Belize City and one in rural Belize district.

Amongst the most horrendous were the murder of 17 month old Alyssa Nunez and a 4 year old preschooler, Treshawn Goff. Including Alyssa Nunez, a total of four (4) females were murdered in Belize; the others being Bernadine Loriano, Teresita Flowers and Delcia Blanco. Two (2) murders were reported in Cayo, one (1) in Corozal and one (1) in Orange Walk.

The spike in crime in March, particularly the fateful March 16-18 weekend where five (5) people were murdered in Belize City, prompted an emergency press conference by Prime Minister Dean Barrow, key Ministers and law enforcement officials. Barrow promised that more boots will be placed on the ground and committed to declaring gang ridden areas and areas where gang rivalry exists as emergency areas.

Major security forces were deployed to the City streets and community policing and peace initiatives were re-energized.

The Ministry of Police and Ministry of Defense were once again merged into the Ministry of National Security and the portfolio was returned to John Saldivar.

Yesterday, Attorney General, Michael Peyrefitte informed that the legal requirements of declaring areas of Southside Belize as emergency areas have been completed.

However, since the community policing efforts are working and things have calm down in Belize City, Government will defer the implementation of the measures.
