GOB holds off on declaring ‘Emergency zones’

Posted: Wednesday, April 4, 2018. 10:49 am CST.

BBN Staff: In Prime Minister Dean Barrow’s press conference in March following a spike of murders in Southside, Belize City, he informed that certain areas would be declared as ‘Emergency Zones’.

Barrow said that more boots would be deployed to such zones along with relevant changes to the law in an effort to curb the crime situation.
According to a report from 7News, however, Attorney General, Michael Peyrefitte informed that the legal aspect of making the declaration for emergency zones has been completed, but authorities have noticed that mediation and community policing efforts are working well.
If the community policing efforts can curb the crime situation, the measures will not be activated, according to the report.
