Belize re-registration and the Guatemalan dilemma

Posted: Tuesday, June 5, 2018. 5:55 pm CST.

BBN Staff:  With national re-registration scheduled for July 1, today the press asked Opposition leader, John Briceno if he is concerned about Guatemalans being registered to vote.

He explained that the laws of Belize make it absolutely clear who can register and vote in any elections in Belize.

According to Briceno, he is concerned about the 2,000 foreigners who were granted Belizean nationality on the heels of the 2012 elections.

He explained that there may be a need to review some of those applications to verify if those persons met legal requirements for nationality.

Briceno further explained that he received a letter from the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry in which it was underscored that the Constitution of Belize makes it clear that nationality should not be granted to an individual from a country that does not recognize Belize’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

He also explained that the Constitution of Guatemala makes it clear that there is no recognition of dual nationality or renunciation of Guatemalan nationality.

According to Briceno, this is a legal and political issue.

And so he would ask the PUP’s legal advisor to provide guidance so that the party can formulate an official position.
