Leader of the Opposition suggests OAS observer for re-registration

Posted: Tuesday, June 5, 2018. 2:51 pm CST.

BBN Staff:  People’s United Party Leader, John Briceno has written to Prime Minister Dean Barrow, suggesting that the PM request an observer mission from the Organization of American States (OAS) come to Belize during the voter re-registration exercise.

In a letter dated May 8, Briceno reminded Barrow that Belize is a signatory of the Inter-American Democratic Charter, which enables Belize to request an observer mission under Article 23 of that Charter. Briceno also noted that the OAS had sent an observer mission during the 1997 re-registration exercise.

“Free and fair elections are the cornerstone of our Belizean democracy and is a guiding principle of the Charter of the OAS,” Briceno said.

He emphasized that the observer mission was important because, at the end of the exercise, the Governor General would retire the current voter register and the new voter’s list would become the electoral register for Belize. Registration is scheduled to begin in July.
