Indian nationals claiming to be human trafficking victims, deported to India

BBN Staff: During his press conference in Belize City today, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Joseph Myvett, dropped a bombshell.

He revealed that Indian nationals, Keyur Barot and Jitendra Kumar, had both been transported home.

However, before they were transported police recorded video statements from them both.

These statements will be used in an ongoing case dating back to last year.

That case began last September when businessman, Jack Charles, claimed he sent Barot, his then employee,  to collect $60,000 for him.

But instead of returning his cash and vehicle, Barot fled to Guatemala.

Ten days later he was found in Mexico and handed over to Belizean officials.

However, once in Belize he immediately claimed that he was a human trafficking vicitm.

As a result he was placed in protective custody for the last 11 months.

ACP Myvett said that if it can be proven that the men were human trafficking victims, the charges of theft will be withdrawn.

However, he was unclear as to what would happen if the men were instead only found guilty of theft.
