On Saturday, just over 1,000 Hondurans left San Pedro Sula, Honduras en route to the US. Over the last few days, that number has swollen to 3,000.
The “March of the Migrant” as it had been dubbed began just days after Central American leaders had met with US Vice President Mike Pence.
Pence had urged the leaders to encourage their residents to not try to enter the US illegally.
Yesterday, Trump threatened to cut foreign aid to Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador if they do not stop the caravan.
In a Tweet today, Trump said, “ In addition to stopping all payments to these countries, which seem to have almost no control over their population, I must, in the strongest of terms, ask Mexico to stop this onslaught – and if unable to do so I will call up the U.S. Military and CLOSE OUR SOUTHERN BORDER!..”
Mexico’s President-elect, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador will take office on December 1, 2018, and he has promised to offer jobs and work visas to the Central Americans.
The migrant caravan is currently in Tapachula, Guatemala and is on its way to the Mexican-USA Border.
