By BBN Staff: A group of Belizean Parliamentarians, led by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Laura Tucker Longsworth is visiting Westminster (Parliament of the United Kingdom), London, from October October 2rd to 25th, 2018.
The Belize delegation is comprised of Tucker Longsworth, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Lee Mark Chang, President of the Senate; Omar Figueroa, Deputy Speaker and Minister of State in the Ministry of Fisheries, Forestry, the Environment and Sustainable Development; Beverly Williams, Minister of State in the Ministry of Immigration; Jose Mai, Opposition Member for Orange Walk South; and Eddie Webster, the Clerk to the National Assembly.
The Belize delegation has met with representatives of Tate and Lyle Sugars and has toured the Thames Refinery.
The Parliamentarians have also been hosted by the Chair of All-Party Parliamentary Group on Belize in the Palace of Westminster and have met with the Environmental, Food and Rural Affairs Committee and the Home Affairs Select Committee of the UK Parliament.
As part of the visit, the Belize delegation is also expected to observe the UK’s Public Accounts Committee Evidence Session, to meet with the International Trade Committee, and to visit the University College Hospital (UCLH) Macmillan Cancer Centre.
The visit to the Houses of Parliament, London, is the first phase of a CPA UK and CPA Belize Parliamentary Exchange Programme which is aimed at strengthening the bilateral parliamentary relationship between the National Assembly of Belize and the UK Parliament through a series of practical and diplomatic exchanges, focusing on areas of shared interest and developments in the international political landscapes.
The areas of mutual interest and priority will include trade and industrial relations, gender representative legislatures and equalities legislation, gender-sensitive budgeting, energy security and climate change, defense and security and modernization of parliaments.
