PUP Standard Bearer calls on Department of Environment to address health concern

Posted: Wednesday, February 6, 2019. 4:33 pm CST.

BBN Staff: Standard bearer for the People’s United Party (PUP) in Belmopan, Oscar Mira has written to the Department of the Environment seeking a resolution to a health concern.

According to Mira, there is a stench emanating from an area where there are Belize Water Services settlement ponds and a plant operated by Travellers Liquors Ltd in Belmopan.

Mira says that residents from Cohune Walk, Forest Drive and Rivera are concerned about the foul stench.

In his letter addressed to the Department of the Environment, Mira notes that it is a recurring issue that has not been resolved despite several complaints.

“I do not know if the particles produced by the distillery pose a hazard to human health but residents are breathing this day and night and as such the precautionary principle should be applied,” Mira states in his letter.

Furthermore, he requests that the department address the issue since he believes that residents are subjected to potentially harmful waste products and pollutants.
