Verdes qualify for basketball playoffs; 3 spots up for grabs

Posted: Thursday, March 28, 2019. 3:46 pm CST.

BBN Staff: The Verdes Basketball team is the first to officially seal a spot in the 2019 National Elite Basketball League (NEBL) after last week’s win over the Belize Hurricanes. With a 7-1 record since the start of the season and 3 more games to go, Verdes is looking to qualify as the No. 1 seed and secure home court advantage on Friday night at the Sacred Heart College auditorium when they face the Griga Dream Ballers in a revenge match up. The Dream Ballers has a 6-2 record and is the only team that delivered a blowout loss to Verdes this season, whipping them 82 to 55 back on January 26th 2019 at the Russel Chiste Garcia Auditorium in Dangriga.

At the end of week 8, the standings are as follows: Verdes 15pts, Dream Ballers 14pts, Belize City Defenders, Belize Hurricanes, San Pedro Tiger Sharks and Belmopan Bandits all have 12 pts each. The Orange Walk Running Rebels trail with 10 points.

A win for the Dream Ballers will place them temporarily at the top of the standings. If the Dream Ballers win this weekend, they would hand Verdes their only 2 losses this season. The Dream Ballers and Verdes would then both move to a 7-2 record, and the Dream Ballers would be the No. 1 seed in the NEBL.

If the Dream Ballers lose, they will join the Defenders, Hurricanes, Tiger Sharks and Bandits in the fight to secure a spot in the 2019 NEBL playoff. With 4 more weeks to go, who will the final 3 be?
