NICH and Cuban Embassy sign   Memorandum of Understanding

Posted: Monday, April 8, 2019. 3:09 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Today, the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) and the Centro de Estudios Martianos, Cuba, via the Embassy of Cuba in Belize, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for research and cultural cooperation between the two countries.

President of NICH, Sapna Budhrani, signed the MOU on NICH’s behalf this morning at the Musem of Belize along with H.E. Ambassador Lissette Perez Perez and Pedro Pablo Rodriguez from Centro de Estudios Martianos.

Budhrani explained that there are records which show that Belize and Cuba have a relationship going as far back as the 1700s and both countries will be exploring the depth of that relationship during the four-year length of the MOU.

“It is not only a research collaboration…we expect to collaborate in the houses of culture, arts, history, whatever it has to do with culture, we expect to do that,” Budhrani said.

She added that the MOU is some two years in the making, which started with Deputy Prime Minister Patrick Faber taking a trip to Cuba to discuss cultural cooperation.

Following the signing of the MOU researchers and other relevant personnel in both countries will begin sharing resources and materials.

There will also be a researcher exchange component during the MOU period, where Cuban researchers will come to Belize and NICH staff will go over to Cuba.

NICH intends to issue publications along the way, as substantial discoveries are made.
