House meeting scheduled for Friday

By BBN Staff: The Government of Belize (GOB) has called a meeting of the House of Representatives for Friday, April 12, as a part of its push to hold a referendum.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow explained that he and his government is determined that the referendum will take place but that the party has to exercise a level of secrecy with how they plan to go forward, in an attempt to mitigate any efforts by the People’s United Party (PUP) to frustrate the process.

“We absolutely will fix this and give the people of Belize their right to determine whether or not we go to the ICJ,” Barrow said.

He stressed that while the United Democratic Party (UDP) is hoping for a “Yes” vote, they will not consider anyone who votes “No” any less of a Belizean patriot. Originally one of the options available was to file an appeal at the Caribbean Court of Justice to lift the injunction barring the referendum that was granted by Chief Justice Kenneth Benjamin; however, reports are that GOB will not be using that option.

Breaking Belize New will be reporting from the House Meeting on Friday.
