Guatemala congratulates Belize on voting Yes to ICJ

By BBN Staff: As more countries applaud Belize on the successful referendum, the Government of Guatemala has come forward to offer its congratulations.

Guatemala’s government issued a statement this morning, saying that the decision was welcomed and noted that the people of Guatemala had decided the same during its 2018 Referendum.

The statement added that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala will immediately initiate contact with the Belizean Ministry of Foreign Affairs to agree on a way forward within the framework of the 2008 Special Agreement.

Breaking Belize News (BBN) notes that the constitutionality of the Special Agreement is still being challenged in court by the People’s United Party. A challenge which will have major implications on the steps the Belize and Guatemala agree to take going forward.
