Security simulation conducted at Nazarene High School

Posted: Wednesday, May 29, 2019. 10:36 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Today, the faculty, staff, and students of Nazarene High School, had a disruption in their normal routine, as a message came over the P.A. system for the entire compound to go on lockdown. In an instant, classes had to cease all activities and shut all windows and doors because members of the Gang Suppression Unit of the Belize Police Department were chasing a suspect who had tried to avoid capture by running onto the school compound.

The school’s Security Director Raymond Kelly, who also founded the House of Shotokan Karate Academy, explained that no one on the school grounds knew that it was a simulation, except for the school’s principal. Kelly explained that Nazarene is the pilot school for a training program that teaches schools how to prepare for various types of intruder scenarios, to ensure the safety of the students.

“I’ve seen the scenarios that happen in the United States, and in some cases very tragic scenarios. My prayer is that that will never happen in Belize, but at the same time, have to be realistic,” Kelly said.

He stressed that the students were genuinely afraid as the event unfolded, which was to their benefit because the learning experience will prepare them in the event there is an actual intruder on the premises. Kelly said that today’s event simulated a compliant suspect; however, there is another training component which features an uncompliant suspect who is armed. That simulation will happen at a later date.
