By BBN Staff: The Ministry of National Security says that the number of murders countrywide has gone down considerably at the five-month mark when compared to the same time period last year.

The Ministry issued a statement saying that the 2019 murder count stands at 48, a reduction of 30, from 2018’s 78 murders at the end of May.

“In the Belize district since the start of this year, there have been 31 murders compared to 55 during the same period last year,” the ministry said.

The ministry also noted that the Western and Southern Regions remained the same, recording 8 and 7 murders respectively, while the Northern Region had decreased from 8 murders to 2.

“Of note is that murders caused by gang rivalry has dropped significantly,” the ministry added.

The ministry also expressed its thanks to the men and women of the security forces, particularly the Belize Police Department for their role in the reduction.
