Upcoming symposium to challenge what you know about child abuse

Posted: Tuesday, June 18, 2019. 2:24 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The community organization Children First and Last Belize is inviting professionals in the field of social work and other individuals who are concerned about the welfare of children, to register for a seminar geared towards enhancing their knowledge on various aspects of child abuse.

The seminar, to be held at the Raddison Fort George Hotel and Marina on July 10, is titled “Child Abuse Prevention: a seminar that will help you make a difference.”

Belizean born Dr. Kendra Flores-Carter,  Maternal, and Pediatric Health Expert and Clinical Social Worker in the United States, will be presenting on how the effects of the trauma that stems from child abuse affect the victim at the various stages of their lives.

Flores-Carter, who has more than 10 years in her profession, spoke with Breaking Belize News (BBN), stressing that knowing the effects of trauma is paramount in dealing with child abuse victims and guides how these victims are to be approached at the various stages in life.

“If the child remains in the condition, they are at higher risks of becoming abusers themselves, developing mental health issues, and at greater risk for incarceration due to aggressive behavior,” she said.

Her presentation will also touch on the nature of abuse and highlight socially accepted behaviors that amount to abuse, to educate parents on the effect that these behaviors can have on their children later in life.

“A lot of times parents don’t know what they are doing is abusive,” Flores-Carter explained. “And if that isn’t addressed it contributes to a generational cycle of abuse.”

The seminar will also feature a presentation from Dr. Michelle Nicole West, who will be speaking on child abuse from a medical perspective; as well as a presentation from Judith Alpuche, Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Human Development, Social Transformation and Poverty Alleviation (MHDSTPA).

Registration for the event is $30.
