Belize City Council issues update on repairs of swing bridge

Posted: Monday, November 4, 2019. 1:57 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The historical swing bridge in Belize City has been up for repairs by the Belize City Council (CITCO).

CITCO today issued a statement updating the public on the on going repair of the landmark.

CITCO says that the initial assessment revealed serious structural issues, but none so grave that required the complete closure of the bridge.

Several urgent repairs needed to be completed including rotted guard rails, base plates that deteriorated so extensively that they fell below the level of the walkway, and gaps on the western pedestrian walkway.

Therefore, the Council took the immediate decision to close this pathway and undertake these repairs.

The council notes that upon removal of the walkway the extent of the structure’s deterioration throughout was realized and the urgent repairs became more extensive.

The urgent repairs that CITCO completed were replacement of girders and installation of braces for the walkway.

In addition, the council is painting a protective coat on the bridge to slow the exterior deterioration and installing six solar powered lights for improved visibility at night time.

With the additional unplanned works, which are delaying the installation of the base plates and the lights, the repairs are expected to carry on for an additional three weeks before the walkway can be reopened.

CITCO advises residents to exercise care and attention when using the opened pathway.

Pedestrians have taken to crossing at the top of the bridge which is exceptionally dangerous and strictly prohibited.

“The safety of our residents is always our primary focus and we apologize for the inconvenience caused. We wish to thank you for your continued support in serving the residents of Belize City and your patience as we work to make this crossing safe,” CITCO stated.
