Posted: Wednesday, November 6, 2019. 5:55 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: In honor of International Women’s Self-Defense Day, defense instructor Renee Wentz is offering a free half-day self-defense class in Belize City.

The course will be held on Saturday, November 23, between 8:00 a.m. and 12 noon at the University of Belize’s Faculty of Management and Social Sciences Cafeteria and is free for the general public.

The class will cover topics such as observation (of surroundings), boundary setting, and verbal skills, as well as physical techniques and defense against weapons.

“What I teach is empowerment self-defense,” Wentz said. “That’s because self-defense isn’t just about physical safety, it is about assertiveness, being able to stand up for yourself against any kind of injustice, looking out for other people, ad being able to stand up for yourself against any kind of injustice.”

She added that her classes differ from walking into a martial arts class to learn techniques, given the method of delivery for the information, which is influenced by her years as a trained counselor. Wentz added that the first set of participants attending the class will receive a free flashlight.

The 2019 observation of International Women’s Self-Defense Day will be the 8th celebration of the event.
