By BBN Staff: In Honor of the upcoming 16 days of activism against gender-based violence, Haven House Belize, a non-governmental, non-profit organization that provides emergency shelter for victims of domestic violence, is hosting a 5 kilometer run on Saturday, November 23.
The event kicks off at 5:30 a.m. at the DIGI Park on Princess Margaret Drive, going around the median in front of Val-U-Med Pharmacy back on to Princess Margaret Drive, and ends back at the DIGI Park. While participants run, they will be doused in non-toxic purple and orange paint powder, which are the colors used to represent domestic violence awareness.
Mindi Pratt, director at Haven House Belize, explained that the event also serves as a fundraiser and participants can purchase T-shirts, which will help fund the organization’s next big project, purchasing a transition house.
“This is a house that women leaving the shelter can go, which gives them the opportunity to reintegrate into society while receiving support from us. Each T-shirt that someone buys goes towards that goal,” Pratt said.
She also noted that, as a part of this year’s run, Haven House is reaching out to highschools all over Belize City encouraging them to have their students participate.
“This year we are urging and anticipating more youths to be involved as we know they are also affected by violence in the home, let us encourage them to join us in taking a stand and say no more to domestic and sexual violence,” Pratt added.
Those interested in supporting the event can call 630-4839 or email [email protected]. The 16 days of activism against gender-based violence is being observed this year under the theme “From Awareness to Accountability; Unmasking the Many Faces of Violence.”
