By Aaron Humes: On the heels of Garifuna Settlement Day celebrations in November, Belize’s National Garifuna Council (NGC) hosted a first-ever regional congress (Konguresu Hadamurigun Garinagu) over the weekend in Dangriga with participation from the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) and participation of Garinagu from Belize and Guatemala.

After welcome remarks from Francisca Sanchez, legal adviser for the ICJ; Sandra Miranda, NGC President; and Dangriga Mayor Francis Humphreys, presenters Carmen Lopez, from Guatemala; Venancia Caballero & Sebastian Cayetano, from National Garifuna Council and Carlos Lopez, from ICJ Geneva spoke on Garifuna women and human rights; Garifuna identity and education and international treaties on business and human rights.

Discussions continued on the second day on these and other issues facing the Garifuna community, particularly the traditional Garifuna lands.

Attendees received the information enthusiastically and it will be shared with the wider Garifuna population.

The NGC says it endeavors to have more sessions of this nature that seek to encourage dialogue and action that promote continued development, promotion, and preservation of the Garifuna culture.
