Nursing Task Force takes Ministries of Health and Public Service to task

Posted: Thursday, January 9, 2020. 5:33 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Today, the Nursing Task Force (NTF), a body assembled to review pertinent issues affecting the field of nursing is calling on the Ministries of Health (MOH) and the Public Service (MOPS) to take their concerns seriously.

The NTF highlighted four major issues affecting nursing in Belize and noted that the relevant ministries’ lack of action in addressing those issues demonstrate a lack of good faith.

The issues include the filling of several essential posts including Deputy Director of Health Services /Chief Nursing Officer, Assistant

Deputy Director of Health Services/ Chief Nursing Officer, and Registrar; the assurance that a nurse is included on the selection panel in the recruitment of nurses to fill those posts; the retention of the present Acting Deputy Director of Health Services/ Chief Nursing Officer for a suitable period(no less than six months) after the person to fill the post is selected, and the steps being taken to address the critical issue of nursing shortage in Belize.

The NTF also said that there were concerns emerging from Circular 6 of 2012 that deal with the recruitment and advancement in the nursing profession.

“The Nursing Task Force calls on the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Public Service to respond in writing to all correspondences previously sent by the Nursing Task Force within the next five days to avoid escalation of tension within the nursing community,” the NTF says.

Our newsroom has reached out to the MOH for comment but thus far have been unsuccessful.
