A Paid Political Ad . The views expressed in this article are those of the writer and not necessarily those of Breaking Belize News.

CONTRIBUTED: As a society, many have grown skeptical of the political process and more so the career politicians that beg for votes to live on public money and disappear thereafter. It has been somewhat of a seesaw affair with one party waiting for a chance to get on top as the other falls down. And sadly, as the other gets on top, the cycle remains the same. A few make progress and the vast majority of the public suffer.

The political landscape of Belize is ever evolving and more and more, young Belizeans are seeing the need for becoming actively involved and making a difference in their communities.

This is the story of Councilor Micah Goodin. Goodin is known to many as a young vibrant politician with eyes on the prize and a passionate heart for the people.

Goodin says that his purpose is to serve and help to improve the lives of the people.

“I know most young people dream of being the Prime Minister. I dream of being able to serve and improve the lives of my people regardless of the position that I hold,” Goodin expressed to BBN.

Goodin says that he has long pondered on the implications of having young people filled with ideas and hunger for change replace those political leaders that have grown comfortable and complacent with the status quo.

Micah first caught our attention during his valedictory address at Sadie Vernon.

The passion and eloquence and love of people displayed in his speech never waned. To the contrary, it intensified as we saw during his time of tribulations at St. John’s Junior College. There he was introduced as a student leader concerned not only with issues on campus but issues of national interests. He has also supported COLA and BGYEA.

And then before anyone knew it, he was a card carrying member of the PUP.

Many were disappointed that he chose to engage the PUDP political machinery but we understand the uphill battle it would have been to fight from the outside. Goodin has been fighting from the inside from all the news articles we can find in the archives.

Goodin has always been open and true about his intentions to see better come for the residents and in so doing, we also witnessed his own struggles inside and outside of the party.

But for what it is worth, all those wars Goodin fought was not for himself nor for any personal gain. It was all about the people who had less. The people who deserved more; the people who come from places like the place where he was born and raised.  Belize City residents have seen Goodin transform into a man over the last few months. He has done a lot in education and sports and his new venture has helped in raising the standards and demonstrating that much more can be done for young people in Belize City.

He has sent children to school via his scholarship fund.

This year if successful over a 100 students would have benefited from his efforts.

He has provided incentive for many youth through his sporting initiative. Over the Christmas young men of the Fabers Road area took home $5,000 to their families.

Goodin, a youth from Majestic Alley built a basketball court for the youth of George Street. Goodin’s personality may not be to everyone’s liking but undeniably, he is a man at work!

Besides his passion to serve, Goodin is also engaged in completing his undergraduate degree in Public Sector Management. Goodin told BBN that once completed, he hopes to pursue graduate studies in social policy.

In relating to the obstacles and daily struggles of thousands of Belizean youths, Goodin shared the reason for the birth of his scholarship fundraiser.

“This scholarship fund is important to me because while at 6th form the government took away my scholarship in an obvious case of political victimization. Then many people like Anthony Mahler and the Kremandala group stepped up and ensured that my fees were covered and I was able to complete SJCJC,” Goodin stated.

Micah says that the fund provides the opportunity to give back to those coming behind who really need the help.

Finally when asked about the realities of being young and elected he responded, “Being young and elected in Belize City is a huge responsibility. It is a demanding undertaking that I take seriously. I put my heart and all in it. My secret has been to keep as connected as possible to the people I serve. It is in that connection that I find strength and solace. It is in that connection that I am reminded everyday of my purpose.”
