KHMH responds to worker’s union: agrees to temporary closure of ICU

Posted: Sunday, April 12, 2020. 6:41 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Yesterday the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Authority (KHMHA) Workers Union issued a statement saying that it had lost confidence with the hospital authority over the management of a confirmed coronavirus patient, today the KHMHA issued a response clarifying some concerns raised by the union and agreeing to one of its major demands.

The workers union contended that the hospital authority had compromised the health and safety of the hospital staff handling the patient but the KHMHA said that, at the time the patient was transferred, the patient has tested negative SARS CoV-2 and was not classified as a Person Under Investigation (“PUI”) prompting the hospital to follows an established protocol with respect to the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) as set up by the National Infection Prevention and Control Guidelines.

“In relation to the hospital Chiller System, the System is managed by seven (7) independent air handling units located in each of the following areas: Accident and Emergency, Labour and Delivery, Operating Theatre, Intensive Care Unit, Central Sterilizing Unit, Radiology and the old Neonatal Intensive Care Area. The Patient was managed in a new area of the Accident and Emergency Unit which operates with a separate ventilation system,” the KHMHA said.

The hospital authority noted that urgent arrangements are being made towards decontamination and closure of the Intensive Care Unit (“ICU”), which was one of the demands made by the workers union. The KHMHA also said that it was regrettable that the release issued by the union caused a degree of mistrust among the general public and hospital staff, and committed to working diligently to ensure the safety.
