Attorney General: “Border crossing now carries automatic jail time”

Posted: Thursday, April 30, 2020. 3:20 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Attorney General, Michael Peyrefitte, is warning all Belizeans that crossing the border is expressly prohibited under the new State of Emergency (SOE) Regulations and will carry an automatic prison sentence instead of a fine in the first instance.

Peyrefitte said that the prison time is three months for the first offense and up to a year for the second offense, under the regulations being signed into law by Governor General Sir Colville Young this afternoon. He stressed that the borders and the international airport remain closed even to Belizeans.

Notably, Belizeans who are returning home from a medical emergency or coming home to offer medical assistance to Belize will be given consideration.

“We’re having zero tolerance for anybody crossing the border and coming back into Belize. If you’re lucky enough to cross the border, make sure you stay out until COVID-19 is over with,” Peyrefitte said.

He stressed that the Mexican state of Quintana Roo recently had a surge in COVID-19 cases, making it all the riskier for Belizeans to try and venture across the border.
