United States committed to strong partnership with Belize

Posted: Saturday, May 2, 2020. 10:33 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The United States Embassy in Belize issued a statement on May 1, 2020 reiterating their strong partnership with Belize as we face the unprecedented challenges of COVID-19 together.

“The U.S. Embassy, with help from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, successfully secured the export of medical supplies and equipment bought by the Government of Belize in every instance that such assistance was requested,” a statement from the embassy expressed.

As U.S. Embassy Belmopan Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. Keith Gilges stated, “At no time did U.S. authorities detain any swabs that were destined for Belize.  Half of a recent shipment of medical supplies was held because of an error in the broker’s paperwork. Once the broker fixes that error, the remainder will be shipped.”

“Furthermore, U.S. authorities have not detained or confiscated any items destined for Belize.  On the contrary, the U.S. Embassy has helped to secure prompt shipment of all items bought by the Government of Belize or its private funders in instances when private shipping companies misinterpreted U.S. regulations regarding the export of certain COVID-related items,” Gilges explained.
