Ministry of Health honors Belize’s nurses

Posted: Sunday, May 10, 2020. 2:45 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: As Nurses Week (May 6-12) continues, the Ministry of Health (MOH) is encouraging the public to join in honoring Belize’s nurses for their invaluable contribution to society.

The event is being observed this year under the theme “Nurses: A Voice to Lead – Nursing the World to Health.” The week culminates on May 12th, International Nurses Day. International Nurses Day celebrates the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, who is regarded as the founder of modern nursing.

The Ministry noted that the week is marked every year with a series of activities, but those activities had to be deferred due to the ongoing State of Emergency regulations in the national COVID-19 response.

“This year’s theme is an exciting opportunity to promote nursing across the world. The World Health Organization declared 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife. It provides an additional platform for nurses globally as it showcases the unique contribution nurses provide to the wellbeing of the communities they serve,” the Ministry said.

Acting Deputy Director of Health Services, Ann Matute, said that the integral role nurses play in keeping health systems all over the world running is reemphasized through the COVID-19 pandemic, which has created an increased demand on nurses globally.

“Your willingness, effort, and hard work you are doing is paying off. The community instinctively trusts and respects nurses more so now than ever amidst this pandemic,” Matute said. “Thank you for caring and making that difference. We salute all nurses committed to nursing Belize to health.”
