“Hilltop negotiations should be finished before June,” says PSU

By BBN Staff: After over a year of negotiations and court battles, the Public Service Union (PSU) says that it is only days away from coming to a satisfactory solution with the Belmopan City Council on the land dispute over the Hilltop property that once housed the union’s headquarters.

PSU First Vice President, Dean Flowers, said he could not delve into the details of the settlement because the union president and Belmopan Mayor Khalid Belisle have not officially signed the final agreement, but that the matter was settled “in principle.” Flowers also said that the parties are at a position where the litigation on the matter is on the verge of being dropped given the content of the final agreement.

“We believe that the compensation that the final agreement will speak of will suffice our relinquishing of the court case and moving on where Hilltop is concerned,” Flowers said. “I really don’t think that this matter will drag on into the month of June. I am really confident that by the end of May, and even before, the final agreement will be signed.”

Multiple reports have suggested that the compensation Flowers referred to is another piece of prime real estate located in Belmopan. The PSU occupied the Hilltop property for over 30 years, but in November of 2018, learned that the property had been sold to a Corozal-based company called Simplex Designs. The PSU decided to take the matter to court but lost in the first instance, which prompted further litigation and eventual negotiations.
