Belize continues to be COVID-19 free

Posted: Friday, May 29, 2020. 11:21 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: After 1,500 tests, Belize continues to remain COVID-19 free, and Prime Minister Dean Barrow gave his thanks at the start of this morning’s press conference.

But he recorded a note of complaint that someone close to the center of power yesterday (not the official minutes-keeper, circulated their version of the discussion of the National Oversight Committee (NOC) this week: “[This] was wrong and a breach of confidentiality. Furthermore, the error was compounded by the fact that what was released was, in a number of instances, terribly inaccurate. I express the earnest hope that it won’t happen again.”

When the unofficial and inaccurate correspondence started making the rounds several media houses, not including BBN, immediately posted as official information.

The Prime Minister explained that these official notes (from NOC and Cabinet) help him deliver the decisions accurately and concisely.

As to the level of testing, Belize continues to test three times per week, but the reduction in testing time has nothing to do with conserving supplies, but not wasting time testing asymptomatic people. Nevertheless we are on par with other countries per World Health Organization standards.

The revised Statutory Instrument for effect on June 1 will be discussed on a special Saturday afternoon edition of Ask the Experts, featuring Attorney General and Minister of National Security Michael Peyrefitte.
