Update of Unemployment Relief Program and Food Assistance Program

Posted: Friday, May 29, 2020. 11:47 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Some 43,726 applications for the Unemployment Relief Program have been approved, and 94 percent of applications have been paid out, Prime Minister Dean Barrow reported today.

However, we have heard that there has been foot dragging with second and third payments of this URP.

The rest is not payable due to inaccurate or missing bank information. Nothing was said as to how the program managers will contact these persons to assist.

For the Food Assistance Program, 46,686 households have been reached, and assessments have been done for 38 rural villages in Toledo, Cayo and Orange Walk to receive theirs.

The Prime Minister refuted reports that international assistance will not come in for the month of June; the first disbursement of US$6.2 million from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) is on the way after June 3 when the bank signs off; a further US$12 million will be approved on June 20, and $21 million from the World Bank will be approved by then.

Another $50 million will be approved, but not before July.
