“Hurricane season 2020 about to begin, be prepared,” says National Met Service

By BBN Staff: Today the National Meteorological Service of Belize (Met Service) reminded the country that the 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season begins on Monday, June 1.

During an average Atlantic Hurricane Season, the Atlantic Basin sees around 12 named storms, six hurricanes and two major hurricanes (Category 3 or stronger); however, the Met Service notes that forecasts for this season, which ends November 30, suggest that tropical cyclone activity will be above normal.

The Met Service notes that the prediction is for between 13-19 named storms, of which, between six and 10 of them are expected to become hurricanes, and three to six are expected to become major hurricanes.

“There is no strong correlation between the number of storms or hurricanes that form in any given season to the number of storms that make landfall in Belize. One or more of the 13 to 19 named storms forecast to develop this season could hit the country, or none at all. Therefore history teaches us, as a nation located in such a vulnerable area, we should be prepared each year no matter what is the forecast is,” the Met Service said.

The Met Service also reminded formation of tropical cyclones is possible at any time of the year, as shown by the formation of tropical storm Arthur on May 16 and tropical storm Bertha on May 27, making it the sixth consecutive year a storm has developed before the official start of the season.

All Belizeans are urged to review their family evacuation plans and keep up to date with the latest information from official sources.
